Russian Survival

I read an article called, “Russian survives snooze on train track” by Bas van Rijn. Its funny how much people don’t care, I mean they care about having enough money to drink liquor but they don’t care enough to make it home safely. Vladimir Rasimov passed out and fell asleep on the train tracks, on his way home after previously hanging out at the bar with his friends. A train driver saw that there was something on the tracks and tried to stop as quickly as he could, but ended up passing right over him. The conductor called the police and rescuers tried to help the drunken man escape from underneath the train but unfortunately they were unable to reach him. So the train had to carry on until he was free from the train’s grasp. When interviewed the train driver said that he tried to stop, but in such a short distance going at the speed he was there wouldn’t have been enough time anyway. So the man was saved and hopefully learned from his stupidity (…).

Can a dog really be a hero?

I read an article called, “Dog saves abandoned baby from forest”. We all are heroes in this world….A dog was in search of food for her newly born puppies when she came across an abandoned 2-week old baby in a forest that was (situated south of the capital of Nairobi). Miraculously the dog then took the child (that was wrapped in dirty cloth) across a dangerous road and through a barbed wire fence and placed it near her own puppies. (No, she was not expecting the puppies to eat the child as some might think!) A witness, Stephen Thoya, claims that he heard a child crying and saw the dog carrying the child across the street. Mary Adhiambo, proud owner of the dog says that her dog never once let the child out of sight and the dog cared for it until it was able to be rescued. Once Ms. Adhiambo had spotted the child she rushed it to the hospital. They named the child Angel (what better name than that…?). “This is ultimate proof that dogs really are a man's best friend!”

Another glimpse into our past

I read New "Sea Monster" Species Identified. As we stumbled upon pieces of our past, clues had to be put together to unravel its mysteries. Fortunately the fossils of a sea monster have finally been able to be identified. This particular sea monster is a reptile and is called a Nichollsia borealis. Scientists say that it is one of the oldest and most complete plesiosaur fossils in North America. As one might ask a plesiosaur was a carnivorous reptile that existed between the dates of around 205 million to 65 million years ago. Surprisingly these fossils were found by mine workers in about 200 feet deep of a surface mine in Alberta in 1994. When these fossils were found, they were intact unlike some of the previous fossils in this category that were found in more scattered like ways. Just recently scientists ran a 3-D CT scan of its braincase, which was able to provide much necessary information towards their discovery. Yes something like this will provide a glimpse of their past, and the more discoveries we make the further progress in history we will go.

Imagine living with 2 heads and 1 body...

You could classify a 2 headed snake underneath the word monster or protected specie. Not to long ago in Spain a 2 headed snake was found and has given scientists the opportunity to study their abnormality. This particular snake was found near the village of Pinoso, Spain and is called a ladder snake. The ladder snake is non-venomous and it’s about 8 cm in length. Survival for these types of animals is very poor, I’m not saying they should be protected or put under special conditions (like no hunting or killing). Burghardt says that its takes a great length of time for either snake to eat due to the fact that they fight over their prey. It’s like any other animal in the world having 2 heads and 1 body…. They especially struggle with direction and which way to slither, which makes them fall as easier prey. I guess we never really know what’s out there because there is always something new to discover.

The City of Angels, the Story I wrote!!!

Over the past few days, I’ve been writing a story called the City of Angels. (Here is a little of what it is about…) The City of Angels is where people are Okayed or denied passage into Heaven. So in order for someone to get into heaven they must be put on trial in front of the Court of God to verify that their journey has ended or that their journey has not ended and that they need to be sent back to earth. Trials can go for days on end so many people have to wait for their trial and the longer someone waits the more like an angel they become and appear. If someone fully becomes an angel they are sent to guard the Gateway of God, or the entrance to the City of Angels. So at the beginning of the story a man passes away at a hospital. He ends up attending his funeral and burial and he then can’t decide what to do so he glides out and over the ocean. Sometime during the night he passes into Heaven and meets an Angel named Roger who shows him inside the City of Angels. He then starts his exploration of the city and the venture to the Court of God.

I would love any and all feedback!!

Stealth Reborn, Popular Science

Currently the US Bomber Fleet is made up of the B-52 (which can carry a wider range of weapons and fly longer without refueling than any other bomber made) the Air Force also has the supersonic B-1B (which flies at low altitudes and flies at high speeds but only carries non-nuclear weapons) and finally the B-2 (which can carry either nuclear or conventional weapons and is today’s only stealth bomber.) On the verge of arriving is the next generation bomber which is coming out in 2018. The new bomber can carry between 14,000-28,000 pounds of payload. The new craft can carry air-to-air missiles for self-defense. It can even fly at the center of a wolf pack. They are still debating on whether or not to make the plane manned or unmanned. If they do not have a pilot it could extend the length of missions but there will be a large debate between those who find it necessary and those who are scared of robots being in charge of nuclear capability.

Chapter 7, Absolute Zeros [The Physics of Zero]

When a giant star collapses , it disappears and becomes part of the unknown. The gravational attraction is so massive that no force in space can prevent its collapse. Thus, the dying star becomes smaller. After it becomes so small, it stuffs itself into zero space and becomes a black hole. Scientists think that black holes might travel faster than light and transport people backwards in time. A black hole takes up zero space, but has mass. The curvature of space gets larger as you come closer to a black hole. A black hole goes into infinity, it means that it has torn a hole in space time. Nobody seems to know what happens in those torn areas, its a puzzelsome concept. Einstein denied the existance of black holes. A black hole is very dangerous and space tries to prevent people from seeing the zero at the center of the black hole. " The censor is gravity itself". Black holes are part of the mystery of our universe!

PersiaPersia, which has the-distinction of being the cradle of civilization in Asia has made lasting contributions to the development of Islamic fine arts. The development of painting and other fine arts in Persia dates back to even before the Abbasid Caliphate. During the golden period of the Abbasid Caliphate when arts and literature flourished, the Persian influence in fine arts, especially in painting, was very strong. Except for the ornamental wall paintings, which came to light in the Palaces of Samarra during the course of excavations, no traces of Persian painting of the Sassanian period has been found. The first extant work of Persian painting of the Saljuq period dates to the 12th century and the tendencies evident in this work continued upto the end of the 13th century A.D. The works of this period are astonishing in their refinement of colour shading and the "forcible depiction of their subjects". The witty conceits of Abu Said of Serruj are highly commendable. The 'Minai' pottery of Raghes (c 1200) which borrowed the Baghdad style of painting was also prevalent throughout Persia.

Chapter 6, Infinity’s Twin [The Infinite Nature of Zero]

I read chapter 6 from the book Zero called Infinity’s Twin. Similarities between Infinity and zero have been known since the Renaissance. Take for example, if you multiply anything by zero, its zero and if you multiply anything by infinity, you get infinity. Zero and Infinity are the yin and yang of our world, they hold a great unknown power. Zero was not the only number that suffered from exile and ignorance, other numbers were treated equally the same. Indian Mathematicians accepted zero while Europe rejected it, and the East worshiped and used negative numbers while the West tried to not understand it. Many people refused to accept negative numbers and these people called negative numbers “False Roots”. To move on to further topics, the first development was projective geometry that came into existence at time of war. In the 1700’s the European countries were very tense and were searching for power. (to be continued…)

Chp 3 "Nothing Ventured [Zero Goes East]

I read chapter 3 from the book “Zero”. In fourth century BC Alexander the Great marched his troops from Babylon to India, this invasion was when the Indian Mathematicians were able to learn about the Babylonian system of numbers. India was isolated from Rome and Rome’s power after Alexander the Great died in 323 BC. India was never afraid of the infinite or the void, it was a strong country. India was an important place for the Hindu religion. The longer Hinduism thrived the more it became monotheistic. The God in Hindu religion was Shiva who was both creator and destroyer of the World. Shiva is also remembered and represented by nothingness. Nothingness was what the world came from, to achieve nothingness is the supreme goal of us all. Here, take for example the story death tells,
In the beating heart that lives in us all is the Atman (the spirit) who is small yet very big. “It resides in everything and is part of the essence of the universe that is immortal”. When a human being dies, the Atman is released to join another person. The goal of a person is to free themselves entirely of the atman, which if a person is ruled by their body they can never be free. But once you are able to release and separate yourself and embrace the wonders of this world, you will be set free and liberated.

Chp 2 “Nothing Comes of Nothing” [The West rejects Zero]

I’m reading Zero by Charles Seife, and I read chp 2. The Greek Universe was created by Pythagoras, Aristotle, and Ptolemy which was able to survive after the collapse of the Greek civilization. Because of the fact that the Greeks were unable to accept such things as zero or nothing, the West did not accept it until many years later. Before the people of the West could accept such things they would have to destroy their universe, unfortunately. The Greeks thought of numbers and philosophy as being inseparable. Take for example, Hippasus of Metapontum whom was part of a cult that he betrayed. Hippasus had revealed a secret deadly to the Greek civilization, for revealing the secret Pythagoras sentenced Hippasus to death by drowning. The leader of the Cult that Hippasus belonged to was Pythagoras. Pythagoras believed that he was the reincarnated soul of Euphorbus. People believe today that Pythagoras wrote the constitution for Greeks living in Italy. The Greeks inherited a lot of their knowledge of numbers from Egyptians, surprisingly. In Greek mathematics there was no clear distinction between shapes and numbers. The Ancient Greeks became the masters of Geometry, and the questioners of the heavens and the moving planets or the “harmony of the spheres and the beautiful mathematical orchestra”.

Will the Protesters get what they want from the Thailand Government...?

(The reason I wrote about this article is because of the fact that my cousin and aunt are stuck in Bangkok Thailand in a very bad situation…that could possibly go worse in the next few days.) I read an article called, “Thailand shuts down second airport in capital”. In this article it talks about anti-government protesters storming airports, closing main streets, and warning people who work for the government to leave their jobs… or else. This country’s main international airport has been closed since Wednesday because of the tens of thousands of protesters that are laying on the terminal pushing for the government’s resignation. There seems to be no end for the protesting until Somchai resigns or the government takes back its power and puts it into action. Already blood has been shed, and people attacked. The European Union and Britain’s Foreign Office have issued statements of concern towards Thailand. Currently thousands of travelers are stranded in Bangkok; several thousand travelers have been bused to city hotels to await developments on the issues.

The Heaven on Earth in Shoepack Lake Mn

I read an article called "The Fish that Time forgot" from the magazine "Minnesota Conservation Volunteer". Two young men decide to travel to Shoepack Lake which is a six hour hike and canoe trip. Before leaving, they stop at Bait N' Bite Cafe to talk to two old timers who made their living as commercial fishermen on Lake Kabetogama and Shoepack Lake, according to previous people who had gone to Shoepack Lake it is a difficult journey and traveled by few. When they arrive, the history of the lake is the reflection on which they reciecve off the water. The muskies that live on Shoepack Lake occupy a unique and unforgettable footnote in the history of Minnesota fisheries. While they were there they caught four muskies which they had to release after caught. This place is really heaven on earth to all fishermen.

Our new home may be closer than it seems...

I read an article from the magazine Popular Science called, Gone Fission. In this article they talk about when they do get humans to the moon in 2020 what the power source will be for the duration in space. Space Agency Officials are thinking of going nuclear. They want to install an underground, uranium-powered nuclear reactor to produce heat and to generate electricity. NASA is currently debating between two power converter designs. The two choices for turning nuclear heat into electricity are the Sterling Converter (which is more efficient) and the Brayton Converter (which is more reliable). With this nuclear heat in space, each and every one of our lives will be moved at the very accomplishment of our world. They think that if when installed it may run for around eight years, maintenance free! Could the moon become our next potential home or will it remain the very haunting planet it is already…?

The Scary Night in the Woods

I read an article from the magazine “Field and Stream” called, “My Scary Night” written by Keith McCafferty. The idea of this article was to prepare someone for surviving a night in the woods. Keith McCafferty drove into the country of Montana to get a broader view of the word backyard. I think in order for people to understand survival in the wild, they actually have to experience it. A survival kit is necessary and helpful incase of an accident or incase something bad happens. A night alone in the woods can make a real coward of anyone, even with a rifle by their side. The fear of what’s waiting out there is what keeps you from falling asleep in the night. That is a painful lesson to learn. It’s hard to imagine what you learn alone from a night in the woods, how the heavens shine brightly and how among the stars it shows a broader picture of what life really is.

Is the end, the heart of the number zero…?

I’m reading a book called Zero (the biography of a dangerous idea) written by Charles Seife. In the book the author describes zero as “the ineffable and the infinite” because it has been feared and hated. Zero has always held a potential threat to physics; it still makes this century’s brightest minds struggle to understand it. Through history, despite the rejection, zero has always defeated those who oppose it. We could never ask zero to fit anything, instead zero has shaped our view of the universe and of life. At the beginning of history, there was a time when there was no zero or seven or even seven hundred. Wolves surprisingly were a key clue to the nature of the Stone Age mathematics; wolves were used as a blackboard. “This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but with a whisper”. The universe begins and ends with zero.

Firewood

I read an article called "Makers of Firewood", by Will Weaver. This article was about, the work of cutting and chopping wood and how to some it is viewed as an art and to others it is viewed as a family ritual. Work, thats what it takes to cut firewood. It is the amount of work that catches the true firewood maker. There is a need in us all... no matter how small, to work. "You can tell a lot about people by their firewood piles." If people have a will, then they have a way. It is a family ritual to those who think, working hard is an important characteristic in life because people who work hard are more successful in life. I really never thought about how hard it must be to wake up every morning to chop wood, I really do appreciate those who appreciate chopping firewood.

Is Mars a home for me...?

I read the article, "Purchase a Lovely New Home on... Mars?". Buzz Aldrin is the second man to have ever stepped foot on the moon, Aldrin is proclaiming that the United States Space program send a mission to Mars and if they do they should be prepared to stay. Aldrin proposes that when and if men and women board the first non-stop flight to Mars they should establish a long time colony on the planet. These people who leave for Mars should think of themselves as pioneers, they should not plan on coming home. You might ask why not the moon first..., it is a shorter trip but it offers no potential for life. The reason for sending humans to Mars, instead of robots is the fact that humans can act independently, a necessary and crucial trait for life in space. If the time comes for when we do send people to Mars, it will be one giant step for man.

A Giant Leap for Mankind

I read a poem called,” The Moon Ground” by James Dickey. This poem was written in, “To the Moon and Back” from the 1969 Life special edition magazine. This poem describes the curious wonders of the moon and space. It describes how they felt free as a bird and light as a feather. “We will take back the very Stones of Time, and build it where we live”. These astronauts went to space in search of answers to our many questions of the moon. They brought back samples of rocks and earth to test and experiment with. Armstrong, Collins, and Aldrin were the guinea pigs of their generation; they were willing to give up everything for the advancement and protection of the world. The Eagle has landed. What life holds in store for us, nobody knows. Our destiny is as mysterious as the icy ocean. As long as we believe, the impossible is still possible.

A time for choosing and a rendezvous with destiny

I read an address that was made on behalf of Senator Barry Goldwater, who Ronald Reagan actively supported. One of the main points Senator Goldwater was trying to get across to the reader was the road to peace has always been a simple answer. Peace comes through strength according to Senator Goldwater, and there is no choice between peace and war only between fight and surrender. When we will have finally understood the price at which freedom costs, all of us will have weakened from within spiritually, morally and economically. Senator Goldwater believes this because he has heard voices on our side pleading for “peace at any price” or “better read than dead”. There was one man who said he would rather “live on his knees than die on his feet”, which speaks volumes. If I would ever fall to my knees during war, it would be because I was fighting for something I believed in and thought it was worth dying for.

The Great Outdoors

I read “Up North in the Big Woods”, written by Bill Heavey from the magazine Field and Stream. Bill Heavey talks about the big woods and wildlife; he puts an especial emphasis on the fact that when you’re in the wild there are places you’d need more than a compass to get you out in one piece. The forest is not the park where you go to play on the playground, and the forest is not the wildlife management area, the forest has a mind of its own. The name of the game in the forest is the competition for light, amazingly enough a maple tree can survive on a little light each day. Bill Heavey is a hunter, who every year makes it a priority to travel into the woods to do what he does best… go hunting! The great outdoors will always be part of the grand mystery of the world.

Heroes in a Box, but in my world its Heroes on a Sphere

A hero is whoever we want it to be; they fight for justice, and run the distance, and are the unexpected. We are led to believe that to be called a hero you must have super powers and have to fight crime at night , but think of all the people who we forget to thank for the simple things they do for us, what if ordinary people are the real heroes in our world…? A hero is a leader, a voice for the people, and a protector of the innocent. President Roosevelt says, “The nation that destroys its soil destroys itself”. President Roosevelt was a protector of the innocent because he was the President during WW2 and when people were dying in Europe and people began to die in the US because of the bombing the Pearl Harbor, the US went into high gear and took care of the problem. President Roosevelt was a true hero. I learned that heroes are one of the most skeptical yet confusing sorts of people that roam the earth.
Throughout all my research, I have learned that there is an infinite amount of heroes. Yet it’s funny how few find that hero inside themselves. Heroes are the saviors of the world; history has had its fair share of ebbs and flows along with heroes.

Anti-war Protests going too far, war is a necessary evil, author-Curtis Copeland

This is now, people holding signs, yelling protests, in the heat of the day. They believe that war is evil; unlike them I believe that war is a necessary evil. At these protests people have been seen, burning the American flag. The American flag represents those who risked their lives to preserve freedom; the American flag is an icon and a symbol. Nobody should show disrespect for our fallen heroes. When these people “the seekers of peace” burn the American Flag, they are burning the very thing that represents their right to have their own opinion. War is a terrible thing, and I wish nobody to have to experience the horrors of it. Sometimes war is necessary, who would say it isn’t? Then you might want to consider this, if you do not agree with me, tell those thousands of Jews to go back to those concentration camps because we made a mistake in fighting the war against Hitler, there is nothing different between the War we are fighting in Iraq and WW2. Just remember that this nation has gained its independence through war. “I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free…”

The Reporter Online, no author given, "We are the past, present and future only as long as we can stand up for whats right"

It’s mind-boggling to some and straight-forward to others. This presidential election is crucial to our survival and success as a country. I’d like to see experience and knowledge sitting in the White House; I want to feel protected and secure. We are not in the best economic position as of now, but if the media would quit infiltrating into the minds of Americans and if Americans would think for themselves then we wouldn’t be in this situation we are currently in. I think that you should research all you can about the person you vote for and know all you can about their past and past associations and friends because all of those facts and associations and voting records show what kind of person your going to vote for and what kind of person they will be in office. Your right to vote is held in the highest honor in the whole world, we sit as gods, and should do as gods do, save in the time of need, kill in the time of war and free those who need to be freed.

The Vision of a Champion by Anson Dorrance, The challenge is the victory and the victory is the triumph

Every day will be a battle; soccer is a stuggle between the people that want it and the people that don't. The challenge, is whta makes soccer so enjoyable. "Be ready for the possibilty of a rough ride,"(Dorrance 130). It will be hard, it will be tough, it will take you past your limit and futher on and what keeps us all going is the sight of victory. However what I might say, is easier said than done. Learn to thrive in the "deep down" challenging places because that will help you tobecome a better athlete. The way to gain respect through sports, is being powerful yet remaining thoughtful and kind as well. Developing your competitive drive will be difficult, but who's said that it wouldn't be a little bit of a challenge? Encourage yourself to remember that your enjoyment is the reason you should play. A little bit of encouragement, can go a long way.

The Vision of a Champion by Anson Dorrance and Gloria Averbuch, The shark in the water

Be the shark in the water. “Every single duel is a statement of who wants it more,” (Dorrance 125). The Competitive Cauldron is a fire into which every sports player is thrown into in order to develop into a stronger player and develop the critical aspects of becoming the best player on the field. People play like they practice. How you practice is how you’ll perform. The competitive cauldron is all about outlasting the other player psychologically and physically. You must be constantly willing to push yourself beyond your limit in order to toughen yourself and to break your opponent. When you talk about breaking an opponent it’s not physically but psychologically. The ability to break an opponent creates an enormous advantage. Have competitive practices because it will continually feel like being tossed into an arena like a gladiator, unable to back down to a tougher challenge. Self discipline and desire helps you to become a better player.

The Vision of a Champion by Anson Dorrance and Gloria Averbuch, Living the Dream

It seems so far and long from now but college is just around the corner for us all. There will be many reasons for everyone why we pursue this high level of sport, we will be taken and tested to our limit in college. UNC believes that it is the variety and commonly shared real-life situations that make their community of soccer players so special to one-another. “It is rich while you’re living it, and it will remain rich after you graduate,” (Dorrance 108). When I think about the very few who make it into any professional sport, I think of the best of the best. These three qualities will make any team, college or impress any job position; they are hard working, great leadership and being dynamic. Be patient with yourself in your development as a player, then these three qualities will begin to develop and brighten into something incredible and everlasting.

The Vision of a Champion by Anson Dorrance and Gloria Averbuch, THE TRUE CHALLENGE

“There are times it isn’t fun. But if you can remember how fun it is when you do reach your goal- when you get fit, or healthy, or master a skill, or find the right team- that’s what’s important,”(Dorrance 89). Everyone seems to think that its hard work every day until you reach your goal then it becomes harder but what people fail to understand is the fact that you’ve gone beyond your expectations and your ability. If it gets harder, it’ll be just a bigger challenge. It is important to know that nothing is beyond your reach, and nothing is too hard or too far for you to get to. If everyone woke up every day with that same kind of understanding of life, we’d be blown away. When you don’t make a team, or fail to ace a test it’s just the beginning and failure can be the building blocks that lead you to success. Be the difference in the game, and be the margin of victory.

Hallie vs. Codi

What one person sets out to do is what another person accomplishes unknowingly. What one person understands another person struggles to figure out. These ideas are represented in the book “Animals Dreams”. Codi is more familiar to a stranger than she is to herself; she finds it difficult to be someone when her sister is not there to guide her down the right path. All throughout her life she and her sister have had to live without a mother. Hallie is caring and adventurous, she likes to do what nobody’s done, and she likes to help those who can’t help themselves. Hallie moves to Nicaragua, knowingly understanding the situation. She walks into a place seeing hope and improvement, which is what most people can’t see. Codi has been searching her whole life to find a place she can call home, where she can be in peace with herself. Grace might be a town out in the middle of nowhere, but it became the town Codi was ever so desperately searching for. Many people live their whole life not knowing that what their searching for is directly in front of them. Codi is shy, and when she became a teacher it was difficult for her to teach and tell the students what she wanted to say. In the end, she was looked up to by many students, teachers, friends and family. Hallie is the kind of person who is home anywhere she goes, which is difficult for most and talent of Hallie’s. Animal Dreams teaches you many lessons that most haven’t learned or have even heard of.

The Vision of a Champion: By Anson Dorrance and Gloria Averbuch

Great success doesn’t develop in a day or a week or a month, great success is what comes of a person who fails repeatedly and still tries again to achieve their goal. In the book, “The Vision of a Champion” they continually talk about how soccer is a sport that requires practice and with practice comes a freedom and confidence that is amazing which builds to success. I agree with the author’s position, because I’ve lived what she recounts to me in this book. I believe that to become a champion is a challenge we would all like to achieve but in the end, some will be winners and others will have lost but to those who have lost they have learned something far greater than those who have won. What sets you apart from others is what makes you great to begin with. Failure is success, always has been always will be.

Intro/ The Shape Shifter in us all: Kindness

Hi, my name is Emma. One charateristic that describes me is kindness. Being kind is not hard, and it does not require practice or effort. It’s surprising to me that people find it so strenuous. I feel that being kind is a responsibility of everyone so that you feel good and so do others. I like to do helpful things for other people but would prefer if I was not recognized for the things I do. If someone is having a bad day, I lend them a helping hand. In doing so I guarantee someone will be there for me when it’s my turn and I have a bad day. Take for example when my friend lost her mother, I was there for her so that she knew she wasn’t alone. Being kind is not hard but understand that kindness can lead to the gateway of greatness.
